TASK DEFINING:
The client wished the lake to fit into the surrounding setting. The area was to look graceful and have an airy feel, while a minimum of maintenance demand was to be preserved. Many visitors move about that area every day.
SOLUTION:
A group of carefully selected stones and a few planted shrubs (tamamono method will be furthermore used for their shaping) formed the basis of the design.
Weather-proof delicate plants that do not spread aggressively - blue water iris, fame flower, a kind of nice sedge- were chosen. The entire area around the lake was covered with coarse gravel.
Almost maintenance-free plants – pines and cotoneasters- were planted on the island in the middle of the lake.
The solution turned out to be correct during the very first winter when the lake dried up. The planted aquatic plants survived successfully.
